Spot Removal

Hello again, sorry about last week, I had a very busy week and I was way too tired and didn’t have much spare time to draw a new cartoon. But I’m back this week so it’s all good, right? This one is another one of those familiar stories I have when it comes to getting my ideas. Which is that I got the basic idea for this cartoon a really long time ago and it wasn’t until recently that I finally figured out the best way to do it. The basic idea was always that spot removal that ‘removes’ Spot the Dog. I think the first idea was something along the lines of a person who ‘cleans’ spots comes to his house to kill him. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I finally had the idea of an anthropomorphic can of spot removal spray going to kill Spot. If you hadn’t already noticed, I’m going through a bit of a “anthropomorphic phase” at the moment, which might I add “anthropomorphic” is like one of my favourite words ever, easily in my top 5. So yeah, been getting a lot of these ideas of late, be it a talking set of drawers or a can of deodorant saving your life, I’m loving bringing everyday normal objects to life to do weird crap. So expect more, I’m on a roll here. It’s fun, what can I say.

I normally hate doing backgrounds, hence why I haven’t done that many of late, but I thought it was about time I started practicing them again as I’m generally pretty crap at doing them. Hence all the detail in the first panel here, which was actually quite fun to do and I’m pretty happy how it turned out in the end. I so could have easily just had her looking into a shopping bag without the background and all the groceries on the bench, but every now and again I like to challenge myself. I also think that when I’m in a rush and getting tired I sometimes skip backgrounds as well. I really should do them more often I think. I always remember my high school art teacher used to always say that “there’s no such thing as a background”, which basically means that every part of you art should be important and given your full attention. We never really got along, for some reason, ┬áprobably why I suck at backgrounds now čśë

Also tried something new with my speech bubbles on this one, normally I do them digitally with the text in a ’rounded rectangle’ shape. This time around I drew them by hand and only did the text digitally. What do you think? I like the different shape of them, I may play around some more with them in the next few weeks.

Anyway, time to go, see you next time!
